Recently I had to exchange my motherboard (the old one wanted to come out of the box (refused to work in the box! Only outside she still worked)). Then I had of course to setup XP and SP2 again – I did it over the old system, without formatting (under linux opensuse no problem: one can use the somewhat hidden Rescue Mode to let it find the new module drivers 😉 All went more or less well but the Advanced tab in the Network Connection settings showed me this:

Windows cannot display the properties of this connection. The Windows Management Instrument (WMI) information might be corrupted. To correct this, use System Restore to restore Windows to an earlier time (called a restore point). System Restore is located in the System Tools folder in Accessories.

I’m using one computer with ICS on XP as router with two networkcards for the second computer. What I had not noticed is that with the new motherboard there was a third onboard NIC the guys at the service had connected the cables to. So it was a NIC change which somewhat complicated the setup of both systems (linux and XP).

Shortly: ICS is not working without functioning WMI so I had to find out what could make WMI start to work again. Took me a week to find the solution which worked for me: in %windir%\system32\wbem\ start

mofcomp windir%\system32\wbem\hnetcfg.mof
